The toenail fungus is often referred to as Onychomycosis being described in the medical terminology in respect of fungal infection affecting the nail, which is quite commonly encountered problem which offers great difficulty in treating. The toenails are having higher incidence of fungal infection in contrast to other finger nails of the foot.
Moreover there is higher occurrence in the big toe. In most of the case there is involvement of the fungal infection of skin present near the nails. When it occurs involving the foot it is named Tinea pedis or more commonly the athlete’s foot.
Because it is an infection, it has great potential of spreading easily from one nail to another, yet it does not happen so in every case.
It has been observed that the fungal infections in respect of toenails are highly common in occurrence in comparison to the infections of the fingernails. The rough estimate is that around 2% to 14% of the adults suffer from onychomycosis, when people grow in their age.
